SHABBY CHIC CRAFTS, A GOOD BOOK AND MY DOG!

I really, really enjoyed making these recycled Valentine Sugar Cookies...from the .25 wool sweater I found a few weeks back. The idea came from this exciting blog: CHASING CHEERIOS which I will soon be adding to my sidebar!

While I was at it...I cut up the cuffs on the wool sweater and created a cell phone holder and digital camera holder. I hardly ever use my cell phone... usually it's stuffed in my purse for emergency's... and it seems like I'd take along my digital camera more...if it were protected inside my purse! I sewed vintage buttons on... I figure I might as well start enjoying them...rather then keeping them in a jar!

I just had to share this picture of my dog Lucy!

I found a really interesting historical-fiction at the local Goodwill...little did I realize...it's for 7th-12th graders!!! But, it's good! And once again, I realize how little I learned in school. And, that it's never too late to educate yourself! smile, wink, nod.

Here's a little blurb about the book- just in case your interested....

This historical novel explores the life of Harriet Hemings, one of Jefferson's household slaves and possibly his daughter. While the character of Harriet is largely fictional, her story is set firmly within an authentic historical context. The plot is revealed through Harriet's diary, a device that occasionally seems forced. A very light-skinned slave, she is favored in the Monticello household where she feels secure and protected. Other less fortunate members of the slave community urge her to make plans to take her freedom when she turns 21, a freedom that Jefferson has promised to all of the children of his supposed mistress, Sally Hemings. It is not until she is almost raped by the drunken husband of Jefferson's granddaughter that Harriet begins to contemplate what life might be like at Monticello after Jefferson dies. Thus, she makes the decision to move to Washington, D. C., and to pass as white. Knowing that this is her best hope for a decent life does not prevent her from feeling guilt over abandoning her race or grief over leaving behind all that she knows and loves. The moral dilemmas Harriet faces are played out against the backdrop of Jefferson's own ambivalence about the institution of slavery. The most telling observation in the novel is that the whites find slavery most repugnant when those enslaved look almost white themselves. Harriet's plight is poignant, and she is a finely drawn, believable character. The racism inherent in the enslavement of Africans is clearly exposed. The evils of slavery appear in a stark light even in the relatively benign environment of Monticello. Exploring the thoughts and feelings of both blacks and whites, this book should provide readers with insights into one of the most significant moral problems in American history.

Happy Friday!

ICE is REAL NICE!

It sure has been rewarding this winter, being EVER so practical and making zany projects-for our home...virtually free...with common household items found around the house! It's things like this...that adds a little sparkle to all of our days and hopefully good memories to look back on! Tommie and I dug through the recycle bin and pulled out odds and ends to use-to freeze colored water in... we set them outside (for two days!) and them brought them in...we made candle holder centerpieces out of them!

My in-laws came over for birthday dinner... and although I made an "upside down rhubarb cake"...too ugly to show.... (but very good!) we celebrated with this ice cake!

Sometime, I'll have to tell you about our kitchen table! Okay, how about now? We have a rectangle shaped table...we ordered a piece of glass for the top..I decorate "under the glass"...depending on the time of year! This week was a big birthday week....so I bought plain lime green wrapping paper...ran it the length of the table...sprinkled foil confetti over it and then set the glass on top! Normally, our world map resides there.... which has been a tremendous learning tool...without even trying! It has aided me in teaching geography...I mean, when you eat three meals a day--looking down...staring at the map...how can you not know where Easter Island is? smile-wink-nod!

Here's a picture of how we started this project...... by the way, we used food coloring and washable paint! And, I tucked handfuls of snow around the yellow candle above... I used tea candles- which burned for about two hours........

I'm off to blog about PROJECT AUTOMATON! See you over at TWISTED EDUCATION!

January 28, 2009

this, that and the other.....

I've been into saving little glass jars lately. I can't explain why...but some of them are so darn cute! Like the kind chicken bullion comes in....or bacon bits. And, spaghetti jars make nice all-purpose jars... we use many of them to harvest larvae in the summertime! Yesterday, I pulled out my acrylic paint and a handful of mini-marshmallows and begin to dot-paint them! More on how cute they turned out in a minute............

Here's something I learned off the coupon message board that I frequent... say for example, you find a coupon, like what's in the Kroger booklet (see below) that came in the mail yesterday..... Now, my instinct tells me "I can only use it at Kroger's"... but, gasp.......NO! ... if it has a number 5 on the outside of the bar-code (see above, I circled it like a blue sun for you!!!), you can use it any place that accepts coupons! These are the type you can "stack or piggy-back" (that's coupon talk-for "us" couponers- smile-wink-nod!) which means that, if you have a coupon for $2. off from this booklet, and Meijers is offering a 2 for $5. and then you find a coupon in Sunday's paper for $1. off and you run out and buy a second paper and clip another coupon out for a $1. off...you'd be paying about a buck a bottle. See how fun this is???

Here's a snap of my finished thrifty craft...and yes....they were completed from start to finish in 10 minutes or less.... one jar holds birthday candles, one jar is still empty...and the other is collecting those odds and end cereal/cracker crumbs...waiting to be added to the next batch of bird suet! I'll be making more of these little jars...you can bet on that!

I hope you appreciate this picture I snapped yesterday...as I was sitting here at the kitchen table... you see, I heard this big BAMmmm! Looked up, and this squirrel was scampering up and down our screen door! I reached for my camera...because it was soooo cool, and I knocked over my piping-hot cup of coffee... which went everywhere! Please....tell me you appreciate it....

This is for the birds!

Oh, how I love projects....good projects that take 10 minutes or less! Yesterday, I meandered down to my recycled bin..(remember, I showed it to you in my Twisted Education blog?)... and pulled out the mesh tomato bags that I've been saving! I then meandered back up to the kitchen...pulled up my sleeves and made homemade bird suet... you have to mix it with your hands or it just isn't the same! The birds know this...I mean, they can tell if you put "love" into the prep work or not! My ingredients: chopped apple and strawberries, end-of-the-bag cereal and cracker crumbs, old peanuts, thistle seed, corn meal, cheap lard/shortening and peanut butter. it. I don't have an exact recipe...I just eyeball it. I tied a couple of long pieces of raffia (you can find it at the Dollar Tree in the craft section) and randomly tied them in our trees! Fun, easy, thrifty and useful...that's what I like! smile-wink-nod!

January 26, 2009

Like a squirrel.............

I've really been enjoying Meijer's 1-day Saturday Sale! On Saturday, they advertised Tyson Chicken (bags) for $3.99 each...usually they're $10-$12 a bag! Whoppin' big savings...so I picked up six bags! Yesterday, after church...(in which the sermon was about anger...which was pretty fitting...because gal-darnet...there's a lot of that floating in the air, here in Michigan!) Oh, where was I? Okay, so I came home and made several freezer meals!

above: bbq chicken...to be served over wide egg noodles or as a bbq sandwich!
below: chicken catcitore (sp?) to be served over pasta.

I also made 3 big jars of homemade applesauce to freeze and 2 jars of Mimi's Chicken-Tortellini Soup!

Like a squirrel....after they cooled, I put them in the freezer. The big casserole pan with the foil on it is a very fattening comfort food-type casserole.

Well...time for me to get busy with everyday life. I'll be back very soon! Happy Monday...and remember, try smiling a little bit more today! It's contagious!

January 24, 2009

eat cheap!

Cheap and healthy!

I'm not sure what's up with Kroger's...but I can almost always find cheap- close-to the-expiration date, bags of salad. Like this one...

Then, if you have a very generous friend like SARAH (see my sidebar-Teach a Fish), who gives you lots of bags of almost-expired bread... and you make 3 loaded cookie trays of awesome smelling, homemade croutons...

And, you toss everything together in a pretty vintage pie plate...with leftover baked chicken, tomatoes, cheese and any other salad jewels you like....
You can eat cheap.
Well, I figured I fed my family for under .40 cents a person. It was good. It was healthy. It had much eye-appeal on this cold/damp Friday night! And...... the lo-cal dinner...left room for dessert!
So, THANK YOU SARAH...the bread was put to good use! smile, wink, nod!

favorite things!

One of my favorite Christmas gifts this past year, is and was this primitive rug...which my mom made for me. She uses recycled wool, dyes it in her own kitchen...to the desired color and then goes to work! Well, it's not really work for her...she really is passionate about this New England craft! It certainly is a work of art to be shared and taught to others! She belongs to a Primitive Rug Hooking Guild in the next county over...which meets every week or so. She has quite a big selection of rugs, which she's hand-crafted.

The rug matches our living room just perfect! We love this, mom! Thank you-again!

My favorite magazine subscription came in the mail two days ago! I still haven't sat down to read it. You'd think being home everyday, all day, all night and living in a tiny home....that I'd be caught up! That's just never the case! Anyhow, I look forward to flipping through this magazine very soon! They usually have some pretty good recipes! How about you? What is your favorite magazine?

Speaking of good recipes and magazines.... my eyes... thinkowl big blue eyes...spotted these free Taste of Home magazines, at our give-away rack at the local library! I found a recipe, which will be wonderful for our Revolutionary study...it's Rhubarb-Cranberry Cobbler. I have both fruits, frozen in our freezer! Pretty darn handy.

Ready to see some serious clutter? I'm heading over to my Twisted Education blog....to share our recycle bin! Please don't think less of me for my junk and disorganization! smile-wink-nod....

Saturday deals and easy fruit salad!

All this...... for $1.68. I'm happy to share the deals, I got today at Meijers and Rite-Aid! Here's how I did it....
  • Only buy what we use.

I buy several Sunday papers and collect coupons from my mom and mother-in-law!

I check in with Hotcouponworld.com and CouponCabin.com everyday...sometimes twice a day! Plus, Meijers has some pretty insane deals on Saturdays!

I never realized this...but you can stack coupons! I'll give you an example... the Kellogg's cereal above...it was on sale for 2 for $5. I had 2 coupons off the internet for $1. off...brings it down to $3. or $1.50 a box. Then I had a .50 off coupon out of the Rite Aid flyer. Now, it's $1.25 a box. I had another Kellogg's coupon from peelie's (the coupons stuck on boxes) for $1. off a box. That made each box .25 cents.

I did the same thing with the Millie's Bread. Today, at Meijers....it was buy one loaf get two free! One loaf was $3.19....so, basically I got 3 for $3.19...we'll round it off to $3. I had three coupons for .50 each...Meijers doubles them so I got $3. knocked off... leaving me to pay .19 for 3 loaves of bread. Which I split up and put in the freezer!

I did the same thing with Pillsbury Grand biscuits...6 free...there was a peelie coupon and an additional Sunday paper coupon I stacked.

Tic-tac candy- Free with coupon at Rite Aid.

Ziplock freezer baggies 20 count- .50 after Rite Aid and manufacturer coupon.

7 more FREE bags of mashed potatoes...can one ever have enough?????

1 bottle of 7-Up- free with coupon at Meijers!

I also picked up 38 bright green Christmas bulbs for $1.60...since I'm a Cloverbud 4H leader, I'm sure I can come up with something crafty for the kids to make... I also picked up Excedrin Migraine medicine (I owe Penny two tablets!) and lip gloss for cheap as well.

I would LOVE to hear about your favorite coupon sites...your coupon deals and how you make couponing work for you! Please share in my comments!

I found a really simple recipe for 1-cup fruit salad on Thriftyfun.com...here's what it looks like and here's the direct link!

Happy Saturday! smile, wink, nod!

January 16, 2009

white!

I just love burning candles.. on these cold wintry days! Something about the little flicker, brings a feeling of warmth and coziness to this tiny little house! One of my favorite scents is vanilla and sugar cookies! How about you? What's your favorite scent?

Oh and last Saturday, I picked up a couple of ivory colored sweaters, at the .25 cent store! I came home, washed them...then with a jar full of vintage buttons and scissors in hand...I sat Indian style on my living room floor and made these sweet little heart ornaments for Valentine's Day. I think I'll paint a big branch white, stick it in a vase & decorate the branches with them.... (I plan to make a few more!)

Another tradition I love is...forcing bulbs, this time of year...I have a few white flower bulbs blooming! I planted them back in December! I also planted cilantro, sweet basil, parsley and dill... they seeds show promise! I spotted little green sprouts, tonight!

I thought you might like to see what my sweet next door neighbor gave me.... this newborn calf milk bucket! He used it on his farm for years and years...when his cattle delivered calves! I just love it...it's quirky and it has a lot of history! Click on over to my
Twisted Education blog and check out how I put it to good use! We're in for a big white snowy weekend...and I can't wait! I don't care too much to be out in it....but it is pretty to watch!
Dinner tonight? Pot Roast, (free) mashed potatoes and garden vegetables from last summer's harvest! Sure did smell the house up nice!

January 15, 2009

favorites!

One of my favorite gifts I received this past Christmas, was this beautiful turquoise bowl from my cousin! I have nothing turquoise in my home... but it is very pastel and shabby chic...so it blends really well! And, looks pretty darn perky holding the clementines!
She also knitted and felted a couple of brightly colored potholders! They're dreamy! I just absolutely love the happy-cheerful colors! Especially, on these cold, wintery 8 degree days!!!!

Remember how I mentioned, I was thirsting to go to the .25 cent thrift store? Well, I did last Saturday! I came out with two big garbage bags full of stuff...all for $7. My treasures included: a large shoebox full of brand new business sized envelopes, a purse from Nine West, a stack of paperbacks for a dime each, lots of sweaters- very nice wool...that I've already shrunk and they're waiting for me to make felted crafts from! I also found the video: Christy.... and a vintage green crocheted doily.... oh...and, I also picked up this 4-pc. china set (below):

and.... this ivory colored plant holder...which is home to one of my violet plants!

I just found a new blog, it's quite interesting...it's called The Grocery Cart Challenge. This lady shares really good tips on feeding a family of 6.

I hope your Thursday is unfolding nicely... I'm off to blog over at my "Twisted Education," blog...I hope to see you over there! smile-wink-nod!

dinner tonight? pizza and salad! what's on your menu?

Friday!

I did it! I splurged and bought a brand new digital camera-- one that will not take blurry-squint-your-eyes-to-see-the-pictures camera! I haven't had time to sit and fiddle with it..but, that's the plans for this weekend! Stay tuned... soon, I'll be sharing "real-life" snaps with you!
Oh, and another thing.... I'm working on... a separate homeschool blog! Just a place for me to write about our days...what's working-what's not working and how education does not need to be found inside a brick building with mass-produced textbooks. Things like learning idioms in the car and learning fractions from sorting wrenches! I'm hoping to post the link to it, sometime this weekend or early next week....
The past few weeks, a couple of my blogging pals have done a "Fill-in Friday" meme... which looks really fun. So, this morning I thought I'd give it a try, too!
FRIDAY FILL-IN'S
1. It's January and I am enjoying the fresh start to the new year! I'm enjoying the long winter days and nights of watching good movies, books and board games and home cooked meals!
2. a second cup of coffee is what I crave right now!
3. Cork and wine go together like a toothpaste tube and toothpaste cap
4. My church is so nourishing!
5. Let us dare to choose kindness, instead of choosing to be right.
6. I love my home.
(itsy-bitsy)
7. And, as for the weekend, tonight I'm looking forward to, relaxing after a full day at homeschool co-op and cleaning duty, tomorrow, my plans include heading up to the thrift store again- the one where everything is mostly a quarter...it's open-for sure tomorrow, having my in-laws over for my mother-in-laws birthday...I'll be making tilipia, rice, vegetable and salad...and Thomas Edison's birthday cake recipe...(since, we just did a short unit on him!), and Sunday I want to, head to church and organize the house and lessons for the up coming week!
update: I made the PEASANT BREAD, which I posted about... I doubled the recipe and it made 5 loaves of bread and one pizza crust. I baked them in pie plates and let Tommie throw different toppings on them! Then I flipped them in half and let him add the same toppings, on top... if you've never made bread...(I don't, because I'm not into kneading!!) This bread is soooo darn simple, requires no kneading and is very 'ingredient friendly!" We all simply loved this bread! A little too much! Click here to get the recipe....I'm telling ya...it's a good one!
For toppings, we used: cinnamon-sugar, onion-garlic-poppyseed and parsley, and just parmesean.
Well, time for me to get around for my day- make myself look like a human, pack lunches and jump on the treadmill...before heading to our homeschool co-op!
Have a fun Friday!
